(10.) SAMUEL SMITH [13-10] b. Nov. 11, 1765, d. April 25, 1842; m. Nov. 10, 1793 Sarah Garfield of
Fitchburg, Mass., b. Oct. 21, 1711, daughter of Elijah Garfield, whose wife was
Jane Nichols of Leominster, Mass. Mr. Garfield d. March 21, 1791, a. 54. His
widow m. Rev. Phinehas Whitney of Shirley, Mass., and d. at Peterborough Mar. 4,
1824, a. 77.
Mr. Smith was a student at the Academies of Andover. Mass. and Exeter; N. H.. He
began business as a trader at Peterborough, was active, energetic and
enterprising; and commenced manufacturing establishments in the present village
of Peterborough. He may justly be regarded as the founder of the village. he was
elected a member of Congress in 1813, but resigned his seat after attending the
first session and part of the second. He held the office of Postmaster in
Peterborough.
