Dundas Genealogy

According to Douglas1, the family of Dundas of Dundas has, in the opinion of the historians, descended from the noble and illustrious line of Dunbar, Earls of March, who also trace their descent from the Saxon kings of England through the Earls of Northumberland.

Cospatrick, 5th Earl of March, died 1139, had issue:

  • I. Cospatrick.

  • II. Uchtred, first of the line of Dundas, who obtained from Walden his uncle the lands of Dundas. Uchtred had Helias who obtained by charter the estate and assumed the name of Dundas. He was succeeded by Serl de Dundas, 1170-1249, and thus the line runs down through many generations, to where its two branches of Dundas and Fingask2 separate.

According to Scot's Peerage, and to Douglas, Sir Alexander Livingston of Callendar married a daughter of James Dundas of Dundas3, and had James Livingston, first Lord of Callendar, who was the progenitor of the family of the Lords of Callendar and Earls of Linlithgow. We thus see that the Livingston of Callendar are of royal lineage.

The Dundas of Dundas and the Livingstons of Kilsyth who married into family of Dalkeith are both of royal descent, the latter being ancestor of Houstoun of Georgia.

Notes:

  1. See Douglas' Baronage, page 171.

  2. Dundas of Fingask.

  3. Scot's Peerage and Douglas.
