George Corliss Genealogy

George Corliss came from England to Newbury about the year 1639, at 22 years of age. He married Oct. 26, 1645, Joanna Davis, the daughter of  Thomas Davis, one of the six signers of the Indian deed of Haverhill, by whom he had 1 son and 7 daughters. He was a prosperous man; his daughters all marrying, and as these marriage connections were important to this genealogy, his children will be given in full.

They were : -

  1. MARY CORLISS, b. Sept. 6, 1646, m. William Neff of Haverhill. William Neff went from Newbury to Haverhill. He died Feb., 2689, aged 47. Upon the death of Thomas Davis, 2683, William Neff was appointed administrator of his estate. After his own death this administration was given to John2 Corliss, the grandson of Davis; then still later, 1723, it was given to John3 Corliss, great grandson of Davis. Widow Mary (Corliss) Neff was the nurse who was attending Mrs. Thomas Dunton and her infant when the Indians took them prisoners to Pennacook, March 15, 1697. On the 29 April following, Mrs. Duston, assisted by Mary Neff and a boy, Samuel Lennardson, whom they found a prisoner, killed ten of the twelve savages in their wigwam, and with their scalps and their captives' guns * * * as trophies embarked on the waters of the Merrimac and reached their homes in safety.
  2. JOHN CORLISS, b. March 4, 1648, m. Mary Wilford. Their son, John3 Corliss, m. Ruth Haines, dau. of Jonathan.
  3. JOANNA CORLISS, b. April 28, 1650, m. 1669, Joseph2 Hutchins, son of John1 and Frances Hutchins of Newbury. Their son, Joseph3 Hutchins, who m. Zoneriah Page, was the father of Ruth4 Hutchins, who m. Ezekiel Ladd of Haverhill, Mass. and of Haverhill, N. H.
  4. MARTHA CORLISS, b. June 2, 1652, m. Dec. I, 1674, Samuel2 Ladd (Daniel1).
  5. DEBORAH CORLISs, b. June 6, 1655, m. Thomas Eastman, Jan. 20, 1679. He dying, Widow Deborah m. next Thomas2 Kingsbury (Henry2). They had children:-Thomas Kingsbury, b. 1691, and Mehitable Kingsbury, b. Jan. 19, 1696, who were both killed by the Indians, March 15, 1696.
  6. ANN CORLISS, b. Nov. 8, 1657, m. John Robie of Haverhill.
  7. HULDAH CORLISS, b. Nov. 18, 1661, m. Nov. 5, 1679, Samuel2 Kingsbury (Henry1). Their son Thomas3 Kingsbury, m. Margaret Haines dau. of Jonathan Haines.
  8. SARAH CORLISS, b. Feb. 3, 1663, m. Nov. 24, 1684, Joseph Ayer of Haverhill.

"George Corliss settled in the West Parish . . . he owned the land on both sides of the Spicket Path for a distance of three miles." George Corliss died, and in his will gave to Mary Neff the land her husband lives upon, Pond Meadow, etc., etc.; gave to Martha Ladd 9o acres at West Meadow; to Joanna Hutchins 200 acres, etc. . . . to Huldah Kingsbury 3o acres of land at West Meadow. To daughter, Ann Robie, zoo acres; to Deborah Eastman one-half of the sixth division, and one-half of the upper Spicket Meadow; to Sarah Ayer, one-half of the sixth division, and one-half of the upper Spicket Meadow.

Henry1 Kingsbury married Susanna ; was first of Ipswich, then he moved to Rowley, Mass., the adjoining town, where he had two or three children, then he moved to Haverhill. His 2d Son, Ephraim, was killed by the Indians, 1676, said to have been the first person killed by them in this region.

His son, Thomas2, married 1st, widow, Deborah Eastman; then, Jan. 19. 1702-3 he married Sarah Haines, who, as widow Sarah Kingsbury, married William Corbett of Lebanon, Conn. The most of the children and descendants of this family removed to Connecticut.
