David Painter Genealogy
(1) DAVID PAINTER, the oldest son of
Alexander and Mary Painter,
came to Indiana with his parents in 1830, when 23 years of age. He was united in
marriage Apr. 26, 1838, to Jane Halton, who came from Roanoke County, Va., in
1831, when 20 years of age. She was the second daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth
Armstrong Hatton, who died about 1820. She had two sisters : (1) Patsy Hatton,_
or Mrs. Joel Lambert, and (2) Nancy Hatton, or Mrs. Jubal Abshire. David Painter
lived for years at the headwaters of Fall Creek, where he owned a farm of 32o
acres. Here all the children were born, and here they lived until the latter
sixties, when they bought a part of the land owned by Allen White, near the
church and schoolhouse a half mile south of the old homestead. Here they lived
until the end of their days. March 20, 1893, David Painter, having survived all
his brothers and sisters, died, aged 85 years, 4 months and ii days. Jane
Painter, who was born March 10, 1811, died July 18, 188x, aged 69 years, 4
months and 8 days. To them were born four sons and four daughters.
(1) William A. Painter. Born Apr. 26, 1839. Married to Naomi J. Van Matre, a
daughter of David and Maria Van Matre, of Delaware County, Ind. They live at the
headwaters of Fall Creek, on the old Alexander Painter homestead. To them have
been born three sons.
(1) James O. Painter. Born Jan. 9, 1866. Married, Oct. 24,
1889, to Florence Franklin, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Franklin, of
Henry Co., Ind. To them have been born one son.
(1) Carl F. Painter. Born Oct. 9, 1893.
(2) Charles C. Painter. Born May 8, 1868. Married, Jan. 25,
1893, to Margaret Rinker, daughter of Aaron and Wilhelmina (Schlegel) Rinker,
of Daleville, Ind. Shortly after his marriage he moved to his present place of
residence, a half mile south of Daleville, Ind. To this union three children
have been born.
(1) Clarence Merril Painter. Born May 7, 1894; died Sept. 3,
1894.
(2) Leta Aronettie Painter. Born March 14, 1896; died Dec. 7, 1897
(3) Elsden Lester Painter. Born Dec. 22, 1898.
(3) Joseph V. Painter. Born Apr. 23, 1873, is unmarried, and
resides with his parents.
(2) Flemmon W. Painter. Born Nov. 14. 1841. Married, Jan. 14,
1866, to Elizabeth Mowls, daughter of James and Mary Mowls. of Carroll County,
O. They lived for years on the north part of the homestead farm. In 1900 they
moved to Muncie, Ind., where they at present reside. They have two sons and one
daughter.
(1) Odessa Painter. Born Sept. 7, 1869. Married, Sept. 7,
1890, to Harmon H. Rayle, of Spiceland, Ind. They live at present in Muncie,
Ind. They have one daughter.
(1) Corona Rayle. Born Apr. 1, 1898.
(2) Lester H. Painter. Born Apr. 18, 1871. Married, July 11,
1900, to Mary Stobaugh, daughter of Francis and Katherine Marquis Stobaugh, of
Cambridge City, Ind. He studied medicine, and is at present engaged in the
practice of his profession at Cowan, Delaware Co., Ind. They have one son.
(1) Howard Fleming Painter. Born June 24, 1902.
(3) Michael M. Painter. Born Aug. 19, 1876. Married, Sept. 30,
1900, to Gertrude Fort, daughter of John M. and Josephine Fort, of
Charlottesville, Ind. They live on the home farm. Post-office address,
Middletown, Ind.
(3) Mary Martha Painter. Born Feb. 17, 1844; died Apr. 13, 1885.
Married, Apr. 5, 1861, to Gustus Mingle. To them were born six children.
(1) Sallie Mingle. Born Dec. 15, 1863. Married, Dec. 31. 1885,
to George Lee, who was killed by unknown assassins while acting as merchant
police at Alexandria, Ind. To them were born four children.
(1) Elmer Lee. Born in February, 1897.
(2) Leslie P. Lee. Born in July, 1889.
(3) Gustus M. Lee. Born in March, 1891.
(4) Florence Lee. Born in 1895.
(2) George H. Mingle. Born July 17, 1865. Married, Jan. 31,
1890, to Olive Frances Gibson, daughter of Clark and Rebecca Ross Gibson. They
have one daughter.
(1) Hilda Adna Mingle. Born Feb. 6, 1901.
(3) John William Mingle. Born Aug. 19, 1867; died Oct. 22,
1890. Married, in March, 1889, to Della Scott, of Chariton County, Mo. To them
was born one daughter.
(1) Ilda May Mingle. Born Sept. 20, 1890; died in 1893.
(4) Gustus Arthur Mingle. Born March 2, 1874. Married, Dec.
25, 1898, to Barbara Bronnenburg, daughter of A. H. and Margarette Bronnenburg.
They have one son.
(1) Arthur A. Mingle. Born Jan. 8, 1901.
(5) Florence Mingle. Born Dec. 13, 1877. Married, May 12,
1901, to Joseph Landry. They have one son.
(1) Ralph Landry. Born May 20, 1903.
(6) Joseph P. Mingle. Born March 15, 1882.
(4) Elizabeth Painter. Born Dec. 1, 1845. Married, June 6, 1883,
to John G. Bartow, son of Aaron Bartow, who came from Germany. Shortly after her
marriage she removed with her husband to Triplett, Chariton Co., Mo., where they
at present reside. They have one son.
(1) Russel Bartow. Born July 17, 1888.
(5) Berryman Painter. Born Nov. 15, 1850. In early life he
engaged in the business of school teaching and as an instructor in music. Later
he studied medicine and located in Middletown, Ind., where he at present
resides, engaged in the practice of his profession. Unmarried in 1904.
(6) Joseph A. Painter. Born Dec. 8, 1851. married, May 14, 1885,
to Helen Sharp, daughter of Madison and Eliza Rader Sharp, who lived at Honey
Creek, in Henry County, Ind. He moved soon after his marriage to Blackford
County, Ind., where he engaged in the pursuit of farming for a number of years.
Later he moved to Hartford City, the county-seat, where he was elected and
served a term as County Recorder. Retiring from this office, he engaged in the
real estate and loan business. He has also extensive interests in the Blackford
County oil fields. They have two daughters.

(2) Lena Painter. Born Oct. 29, 1889.
