"The Oregon, under the command of Captain Charles E. Clark. was on the coast
of California. She was needed at Santiago. Cuba. She left San Francisco on
March 19, 1898, steamed the 13,000 miles without a mishap or strain, swung
into line with the other battleships at Santiago Bay, reported ready for
action and participated in the naval engagement of July 3, in which the
entire Spanish fleet was sunk. That was the finest sailing record ever made
by a battleship. The bravery on the part of Captain Clark placed him in the
front rank of the nation's heroes. A bronze statue rests in Memorial Park in
Bradford. Vermont to the memory of her native son, the late Captain Charles
Edgar Clark of the Oregon during the Spanish American War and later elevated
to the office of Rear Admiral.
